Announcement of the "SHONAN LOVE PHOTO" exhibition

Greetings

Shonan is home to many photography enthusiasts. I've always thought that despite the large number of people taking photographs, there are few opportunities to showcase their work. Older people who belong to local clubs can present their work at club exhibitions, but I felt that younger people who work independently rarely have a place to present their printed photographs as works of art. When I mentioned this idea in meetings and over drinks, several people suggested that we hold a photo exhibition by accepting submissions from the public. That was the first step in holding this open call photo exhibition. First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Enoshima Electric Railway Co., Ltd. for their tremendous support and efforts in making this event possible, to Toho House Shonan Co., Ltd. for their kind sponsorship, and to Shonan Style Magazine for their cooperation in providing space for announcements.
Despite the limited notice period, we received applications from many people, and we are relieved that we were able to successfully hold the photo exhibition. We hope you will come to UMIYAMA GALLERY in Enoshima and see the wonderful works.

Commentary

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who applied. Despite the limited notice and application period, we received approximately 300 applications. Thank you very much.
What distinguishes this open-call photo exhibition from a photo contest is that it doesn't judge the quality of the photos, but rather selects photos that are suitable for the exhibition. Therefore, there are no typical grand prizes or other awards for the selected works; they are all given equal standing. We also consider the time of day, from morning to night, and the sense of the four seasons. As a result, the sunset and Enoden train photos, which received the most entries, became highly competitive categories. While there seemed to be some merit to works that strongly conveyed a sense of the season, I personally would have liked to see more works that strongly captured the summer of Shonan. Unfortunately, some works that made it to the final selection were not chosen because their resolution was too low to withstand panel display. In this regard, I recommend shooting in RAW format or at the highest resolution possible on a regular basis.
While the plans for holding the event in subsequent years are still undecided, I personally would very much like to hold it again. If we do hold it again, I hope you will submit your masterpieces once more.
